This guide was written and edited by Brad Hurley, with grateful acknowledgement to Chris Abell, Bryan Byrne, Rob Greenway, Larry Mallette, Henrik Norbeck, Andrew Pickering, Gordon Turnbull, Hervé Yésou, and many others who have provided guidance, explanations, information, and inspiration about flutes and flute playing.

Thanks too to the photographers who allowed me to use their work on this site.

This guide began in 1995 as a frequently asked questions (FAQ) file on the Ceolas website. Gerard Manning, creator of Ceolas, generously offered Ceolas as a site for the guide, maintained and updated it for a year while I was offline, and patiently helped me hone my still-rudimentary web page markup skills.

Technical Notes

This site is coded in XHTML and uses CSS positioning for layout. It will not display as intended in early browsers such as Netscape 4, but the elements should flow logically. The site is best viewed in browsers that support CSS positioning, such as recent versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and Safari.

Several people provided valuable advice for earlier designs of the flute guide website, including Gordon Turnbull, Nancy Adams (who tweaked the images to make them load faster), and John Harvey.
